In a political speech delivered on Saturday, June 14, in the city of Beni Mellal, Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and former Prime Minister, openly expressed his support for Iran despite the doctrinal and political differences between Rabat and Tehran. He emphasized that Iran is “the only one still defending the Palestinian cause.”
During the political gathering, Benkirane stated, “Iran is a Shiite country and holds a negative stance toward Morocco, but when it is attacked by Israel, we support it because it is the only one continuing to defend Palestine.” He described normalization of relations with Israel as “inhumane and morally unacceptable,” calling Israel “an usurping entity and an enemy of Arabs and Muslims,” stressing that allying with it constitutes “a betrayal of our values.”
Benkirane also praised the international popular support for the solidarity convoy to Gaza, considering this gesture as proof that “the Palestinian cause remains victorious despite narratives framing the conflict as a war initiated by Hamas.”
He strongly criticized those who chant the slogan “We are all Israelis,” urging them to repent and reconcile with their peoples, warning that “the day of regret will inevitably come.”
Furthermore, Benkirane defended his party’s bold geopolitical stance, affirming that Morocco is an ancient nation deeply rooted in history, established long before French colonization. He criticized those he called “servants of France” accused of attempting to remove the Quran from schools.
Benkirane’s remarks come amid escalating regional tensions and reflect the divergent positions surrounding the Palestinian issue and regional alliances.
