The Primary Court in Tangier has sentenced a popular singer to one month in prison with a suspended sentence, along with a fine of 1,000 Moroccan dirhams, following an incident that sparked widespread controversy during an Eid al-Fitr concert.
The case, widely known on social media as the “Alcohol Video,” involved the singer performing songs containing passages deemed “immoral” and “provocative” during a festive event attended mainly by families and children. This caused significant public outrage in the city, prompting several residents to file official complaints.
Serious Charges but Lenient Sentence
The public prosecutor charged the artist with “public indecency,” “incitement to debauchery,” and “incitement to debauchery in the presence of minors,” based on Article 502 of the Moroccan Penal Code, which allows penalties of up to one year imprisonment and fines reaching 200,000 dirhams.
However, the court opted for the lightest penalty, raising questions about the strictness of judicial responses in cases touching on deep moral, religious, and educational sensitivities.
Prior to his trial, the accused was released on bail set at 5,000 dirhams after an investigation was launched following the viral spread of the video on social media platforms.
Authorities Tighten Regulations
In response to the incident, local authorities in Tangier issued a directive banning the organization of concerts or artistic events during religious holidays without prior authorization. The aim is to prevent further violations and ensure that the content of performances aligns with moral and social norms, especially in venues attended by minors.
Debate over Artistic Freedom
This case has reignited the national debate over the limits of artistic freedom of expression in public spaces and religious contexts. Many voices have questioned the roles of the judiciary, administrative bodies, and civil society in monitoring cultural content and protecting minors.
The incident also highlights the urgent need for a clear legal framework to regulate artistic performances while respecting fundamental rights, avoiding arbitrary censorship or stigmatization of artists.
