Launch of “Marhaba 2025” at Tangier Med Port: A Symbol of Moroccan-Spanish Cooperation in the Largest Human Transit Operation

The “Marhaba 2025” operation to welcome Moroccans living abroad officially began on Tuesday at Tangier Med Port, in implementation of the high royal directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who places special care on the Moroccan community both inside the country and abroad. This unique annual operation is overseen by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, in collaboration with various institutional, security, medical, and social stakeholders.

Entering its 25th year, the “Marhaba” operation represents one of the most important bridges of communication between Morocco and its expatriate citizens. It reflects the strategic priority Morocco assigns to migration within its national policies and embodies the humanitarian and social dimensions of migration management.

On the international level, this exceptional operation highlights the deep cooperation between Morocco and Spain, especially in managing the movement of people. “Marhaba” is considered one of the largest transit operations worldwide in terms of beneficiaries and logistical organization.

The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, in close coordination with Moroccan authorities and their European counterparts—particularly Spanish authorities—has activated a comprehensive reception and support system to ensure smooth transit. This system includes facilitating customs and administrative procedures, as well as providing medical and social assistance at various crossing points.

Omar Moussa Abdellah, project manager at the Foundation, emphasized that the operation represents a nationwide mobilization renewed annually. He highlighted the opening of two new reception centers this year at Laayoune and Dakhla airports, bringing the total number of reception centers to 26 across Morocco and abroad.

Sanaa Dardikh, the Foundation’s communication director, explained that “Marhaba” is not merely a seasonal operation but a comprehensive model recognized regionally and internationally for migration support. She affirmed that the initiative underscores the prominent status of the Moroccan community within national public policies and reflects the strong bilateral relations between Morocco and host countries, foremost among them Spain, a key partner in the success of this operation, which requires high-level coordination across ports, airports, maritime, and land transport.

Alongside the launch, the Foundation mobilized over 1,200 staff members, including social workers, doctors, paramedics, and volunteers, distributed among reception centers in Morocco and six centers abroad located at Spanish ports (Motril, Almeria, Algeciras), France (Marseille, Sète), and Italy (Genoa).

Many members of the Moroccan community expressed great satisfaction with the measures taken and the warm reception they received at various stages of transit, praising the social and medical services provided, especially at Tangier Med Port, which serves as one of the main gateways to the homeland.

“Marhaba 2025” stands as an advanced model of organized and humanitarian management of seasonal migration, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to strengthening ties with its diaspora, fully aligned with its strategic vision of building an open, united Morocco capable of turning migration into a lever for development.
