Local Sources Sound Alarm: Slow Development Deepens Hardship in Tamhdit Commune, Ifrane

With Every Summer… Soaring Prices Burden Tourists on Northern Beaches, Amid Questions about the Lack of Oversight

As the summer season kicks off, Moroccan families once again face the burden of exorbitant prices in coastal cities. Accommodation, essential services, transportation, and food costs experience unjustified hikes, placing a heavy burden on holidaymakers, as confirmed by multiple local sources.

In the city of Martil, which sees a large influx of visitors during the summer break, the cost of renting holiday apartments reaches record levels. According to local sources, it is rare to find accommodation for less than 500 dirhams per night.

Additionally, reports from local sources mention significant increases in the prices of cafes and restaurants, with a cup of coffee now exceeding 20 dirhams, fresh juice priced at 35 dirhams, and a simple plate of seafood sandwiches reaching around 70 dirhams.

The surge in prices is not limited to food; beach rentals for umbrellas and chairs have also skyrocketed, with some young people imposing charges on tourists outside any legal framework or official pricing structure, all while oversight remains visibly absent.

One holidaymaker from Meknes commented, “There is no unified pricing, and everyone imposes the price they want, with no invoices or oversight, creating a kind of chaos in prices.”

On the other hand, some local business owners attribute this price hike to the high cost of seasonal rentals, the shortage of qualified labor during the summer months, and the increased demand for services.

Despite this being an annual phenomenon, many observers are questioning the role of local authorities, inspection committees, and trade services in regulating prices and protecting the purchasing power of visitors.
