Summer is Here, and the Beaches of Tetouan Are Packed with Visitors… But Lifeguards Are Few or Absent, and Activists Warn of Potential Risks!

With the start of the summer season, coastal cities like Tetouan, particularly M’diq, Martil, and Wadi Lou, witness a surge of thousands of visitors from different regions of Morocco. This annual scene is repeated as temperatures rise, with beachgoers flocking to the sea in search of refreshment and relaxation.

However, this large influx of visitors is met with, as reported by civil society groups, a disappointing annual surprise: a near-total absence or a significant shortage of lifeguards tasked with ensuring the safety of beachgoers.

In this context, local associations have expressed concern over the situation, deeming the lack of adequate coverage by rescue teams a real danger to the lives of beachgoers, particularly as many families and children head to the beaches.

These groups are calling on the relevant authorities to “urgently hire lifeguards before the peak of the summer season” and to “distribute them fairly and strategically across various beaches according to visitor density.” They also emphasize the importance of “providing them with the necessary equipment, including binoculars, life-saving floats, and uniforms that make it easier to identify them quickly.”

It is worth noting that northern Moroccan beaches have witnessed tragic drowning incidents in previous seasons, with the lack of sufficient lifeguard coverage often cited as one of the factors contributing to the difficulties in rapid intervention.

The hope remains, according to local observers, that the relevant authorities will respond seriously to these calls, ensuring a safer summer for all beachgoers.
