The Importance of Coordinating Economic and Social Policies for Balanced Development in Morocco

Experts in economics and sociology have emphasized that achieving balanced and inclusive development in Morocco requires close coordination between economic and social policies, ensuring spatial justice and improving the living conditions of citizens, especially in vulnerable areas.

During a recent conference held in Rabat, entitled “Challenges of Balanced Development in Morocco,” speakers highlighted that separating economic vision from social policies leads to structural imbalances that hinder the fair distribution of growth benefits and exacerbate regional and social inequalities.

Participants stressed that the economy should not be an end in itself but rather a means to serve people. They argued that economic development that does not translate into tangible improvements in education, health, and housing remains incomplete and weak in its societal impact.

In this context, Dr. Ahmed Al-Kettani, an economics professor at Mohammed V University, pointed out that “Morocco’s new development model represents an opportunity to recalibrate the relationship between economic and social aspects by creating integrated policies based on harmony and efficiency.”

He added that the development of productive sectors, encouraging investment, and creating job opportunities must go hand in hand with strengthening social protection mechanisms and ensuring equitable access to essential services, stressing that this is the only way to establish sustainable development that leaves no one behind.

For his part, Professor Mohamed Al-Salhi, a public policy expert, highlighted that “economic transformations must consider the social dimension, especially for vulnerable groups, the middle class, and rural populations,” calling for enhanced institutional coordination between ministries to ensure the alignment of public policies.

The participants called for adopting a participatory approach in shaping development policies, involving all stakeholders, including public authorities, elected councils, civil society, and businesses, to ensure the achievement of fair development that positively impacts the daily lives of citizens across all regions of the kingdom.

This discussion takes place amid intertwined social and economic challenges, including unemployment, rising living costs, and increasing poverty rates in certain areas. According to observers, this requires strengthening the coherence between economic objectives and social ambitions at every stage of planning, implementation, and evaluation.
