Digital Content Observatory Detects New Methods of AI-Driven Digital Blackmail

The Digital Content Observatory, in its ongoing monitoring of rapid digital developments, has identified an alarming rise in new forms of digital blackmail that increasingly rely on artificial intelligence technologies—particularly voice and image cloning, as well as deepfake manipulation.

The Observatory confirmed that current technological shifts have enabled certain actors to exploit generative AI tools to create fabricated content used to threaten or pressure victims. These practices are often carried out in a discreet and organized manner, making them difficult to detect or counter through conventional methods.

According to sources within the Observatory, the process often begins with seemingly ordinary conversations via messaging apps or social media platforms. Audio clips or photos are then extracted from victims’ accounts and digitally manipulated into false content attributed to them. This falsified material is subsequently used to threaten the victims with exposure unless they comply with the blackmailer’s demands.

The Observatory noted that large segments of youth, women, and minors are particularly targeted by this new wave of blackmail, citing “digital vulnerability” and a lack of media literacy among users, as well as limited legal and reporting mechanisms.

It called for an urgent update of Morocco’s legal framework to address this emerging form of AI-assisted blackmail. It also stressed the need to equip law enforcement agencies and public prosecutors with advanced technological tools capable of detecting fake content and tracing its origin.

In conclusion, the Digital Content Observatory urged all stakeholders to enhance digital awareness, educate users about the risks of sharing personal data and images, and promote greater vigilance and verification in handling digital content—especially in light of AI’s growing capacity to manipulate reality and produce convincingly fake material.
