Official Visit by Musalia Mudavadi to Morocco to Boost Relations and Open Kenyan Embassy

Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, is currently undertaking a three-day official visit to the Kingdom of Morocco. This visit is expected to culminate in the official inauguration of Kenya’s embassy in Rabat.

According to Jacob Ng’etich, Head of Press Service at Mudavadi’s office, the embassy has been operational since December 2023. This move comes in the context of deepening the friendly diplomatic relations that have linked Nairobi and Rabat since 1965.

Mudavadi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Aziz Akhannouch, the Moroccan Head of Government. These discussions will focus on strengthening economic cooperation, with a particular emphasis on rectifying the trade imbalance that currently favors Morocco.

According to official figures, Kenya’s exports currently stand at approximately 480 million Kenyan Shillings, primarily consisting of tea, coffee, textiles, fruits, and vegetables. In contrast, Kenya imports goods worth 12.1 billion Kenyan Shillings from Morocco, including fertilizers, oils, and aircraft spare parts.

The Kenyan official is also expected to meet with the Moroccan Ministers of Agriculture and Trade for in-depth sectoral discussions. The visit’s agenda includes the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), most notably one concerning housing and another between the Kenyan Foreign Service Academy and its Moroccan diplomatic academy counterpart.

This visit is considered a significant impetus for strengthening African-African partnership and laying new foundations for effective South-South cooperation between two friendly nations.
