“Baghdad Declaration” Reaffirms Centrality of Skhirat Agreement for Resolving Libyan Crisis

Baghdad: The 34th session of the Council of the League of Arab States, convened at the summit level today, Saturday, in Baghdad, reiterated the pivotal importance of the Skhirat Agreement as an essential fundamental reference for reaching a solution to the crisis in Libya.

This affirmation was included in the resolution concerning the latest developments in Libya, contained within the “Baghdad Declaration” which concluded the session’s work. The Council of the Arab League reiterated its support for the United Nations mission in Libya, within the framework of its entrusted mandate, and in accordance with Security Council resolutions, with the aim of facilitating the achievement of a comprehensive political solution based on the Libyan Political Agreement, signed in Skhirat in 2015.


Morocco Affirms Support for UN Efforts and Political Solution

Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, represented His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the proceedings of this 34th Summit. The Moroccan delegation included Ambassador of Morocco to Cairo and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the League of Arab States, Mohamed Ait Ouali; Chargé d’affaires at the Moroccan Embassy in Baghdad, Abdelkrim Bensellam; Head of the Arab and Islamic Organizations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Abdelali El Jahid;1 Deputy Permanent Representative of Morocco to the League of Arab States, Hicham Ould Sallay; and Advisor at the Kingdom’s Permanent Representation, Mohamed Nouri.

This reaffirmation of the Skhirat Agreement’s importance comes in the context of ongoing regional and international efforts to advance the political process in Libya towards stability and ending division, with emphasis on the necessity of relying on previously agreed-upon frameworks as the basis for any future solution.
