The Ministry of Equipment and Water has launched a technical study for a national water connection project, aimed at transferring surplus water from the Loukkos and Sebou basins to the Al-Massira Dam through the Abid Rqraq basin. This project aims to enhance water security in regions that suffer from chronic shortages in potable water and irrigation supplies.
This project comes after an exceptional rainy season in the northern part of the country during March and April, which led to the full capacity of several vital dams, notably the Wadi Al-Makhazeen Dam, alongside the Cherif Al-Idrisi, Chefchaouen, and Al-Nakhla dams.
The ministry has allocated a financial envelope of approximately 10.32 million dirhams for this study, which will open technical bids on June 25. The implementation period will last for 19 months, dedicated to analyzing possible scenarios from a technical, economic, and environmental perspective, and selecting the optimal infrastructure to transfer nearly one billion cubic meters of water annually.
This connection is expected to be an extension of the previous connection between the Sebou and Abid Rqraq basins, which began in 2022, as part of a national vision based on hydrological solidarity and overcoming the traditional division of water basins. The goal is to respond to the growing challenges related to water scarcity and supply imbalances in several regions of the Kingdom.
