The logistics sector is a cornerstone in supporting the Moroccan economy, playing a key role in enhancing both domestic and international trade by improving supply chains, reducing transportation costs, and facilitating access to both national and global markets.
Morocco’s development strategy relies on its strategic geographical location at the crossroads between Europe and Africa to develop a logistics sector capable of keeping pace with the rapidly evolving economic dynamics. This aims to strengthen the country’s attractiveness as a commercial and investment destination.
According to data from the Moroccan Agency for Logistics Activities Development, improving Morocco’s logistics performance could reduce logistics costs by up to 20% of its GDP, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Moroccan products in both local and export markets.
Morocco ranks 88th globally in the World Bank’s 2023 Logistics Performance Index, ahead of several African countries. It shows strengths in maritime transport infrastructure and ports, particularly the Tangier Med Port, which is one of the largest and busiest African ports in terms of container traffic.
The World Bank report emphasizes that increased investments in logistics infrastructure and the simplification of customs procedures are key factors in improving logistics performance. Morocco is working on these improvements through a range of projects, including the creation of specialized logistics zones and connecting ports to rail and highway networks.
On the domestic trade front, the logistics sector ensures the regular distribution of goods, reduces transportation costs, and supports supply chains for local businesses, especially in sectors like industry, distribution, and e-commerce.
In terms of international trade, the development of logistics services enhances the export capabilities of Moroccan businesses and facilitates access to new international markets, particularly with the free trade agreements Morocco has with several major economic blocs.
Economists emphasize that the development of the logistics sector is a pivotal foundation for achieving sustainable economic growth, improving the business climate, and solidifying Morocco’s position as a key African and global logistics hub.
