It has been reported that workers and employees of ‘Issal Al-Madina’, the company entrusted with managing urban transport in the cities of Tetouan and M’Diq-Fnideq, have established their first union office within the company, amid growing tensions between them and the management. This action is a response to what they describe as ‘miserable working conditions’ they face daily aboard the buses.
This organizational move came after a general assembly held last Saturday at the headquarters of the National Union of Labor in Morocco (UNTM) in Tetouan, attended by regional and provincial leaders of the same union. The assembly concluded with the election of Saeed Al-Gharib as the local secretary, alongside other members who were unanimously voted in.
This step follows the submission of two official letters by more than 320 employees, including drivers and technical workers, to the governor of Tetouan and the president of the municipal council. In the letters, they demand urgent intervention to improve their working conditions, warning that the situation poses a threat to their safety and the safety of passengers, due to recurring malfunctions in the buses and the lack of regular maintenance.
The workers complain about what they call ‘unfair working conditions,’ including delayed wages, unstable contracts, lack of health coverage, and cases of arbitrary dismissals. These issues led them to hold partial strikes in recent months, with the last one taking place in January.
It is worth noting that ‘Issal Al-Madina,’ which is a partnership between ‘Satyam’ and ‘Transdev Maroc,’ has been responsible for managing urban transport in Tetouan and the surrounding municipalities since November 2023, following the end of the contract with the previous company, ‘Vitalis.’
