During a session of oral questions in the House of Councillors, Minister of Justice Abdellatif Wahbi emphasized the need for courage in discussing the Moroccan Penal Code, calling for the removal of certain outdated penalties.
The minister stressed that the debate around penalties, such as life imprisonment and the death penalty, has become essential in light of the global changes the world is witnessing.
In his statements, Wahbi expressed his firm rejection of the death penalty, highlighting the significant developments happening globally in this field. He added that life imprisonment also requires a reassessment, asking, “What does life imprisonment mean? Is it just locking people away and keeping them imprisoned forever?”
Wahbi continued, saying, “And the death penalty, what is the death penalty? Is this the punishment of a state?” He emphasized that such penalties no longer hold any meaning today and that it is time for a serious review.
He concluded his remarks by calling for a societal discussion on these issues, stressing the importance of being brave and courageous in rethinking these criminal penalties that no longer align with the evolution of society.
