Justice Minister Wahbi Calls for Fining Parents of ‘Delinquents’ 50 to 100 Million to ‘Get Them to Straighten Up!’

Justice Minister Abdellatif Wahbi has renewed his call to hold parents legally accountable for the criminal acts committed by their children, proposing hefty fines of up to 100 million dirhams as a deterrent to curb juvenile delinquency.

Wahbi made this statement during a session of oral questions at the House of Advisors, where he emphasized that “the issue of delinquency is largely linked to the lack of real family care,” adding that the repeated incidents of the use of knives in public streets raise serious questions about the role and responsibility of families in upbringing.

The minister said, “We must think about the responsibility of the father or mother and discuss linking negligent responsibility with criminal responsibility, which would allow for prosecuting or fining parents when their children commit crimes.”

Wahbi added firmly, “If we impose fines of 50 or 100 million on the father, he will straighten up,” considering that such strict measures could help reduce family neglect and contribute to reintegrating the minor into their natural environment, rather than leaving them on the streets.

This stance comes amid a growing societal debate on ways to reduce violence and delinquency, particularly among minors, where the issue of strengthening the role of the family and legally linking it to the actions of their children is being strongly discussed.
