Ferdioua Station in Ksar Sghir: Morocco’s Electrical Safety Valve for Spain in Outage Crisis

Tangier, Morocco – The widespread power outage that struck Spain earlier this week has starkly highlighted the paramount strategic importance of the “Ferdioua” power generation station, located in the Ksar Sghir area east of Tangier, Morocco. This station played a pivotal and crucial role in accelerating the recovery of disrupted electricity supplies, particularly in the Andalusia region of Spain, thereby significantly helping to avert large-scale economic disruptions.

The “Ferdioua” station is a fundamental pillar and vital cornerstone in the intricate and important electrical interconnection system between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Spain. It acts as a central and strategic link within the cross-border energy transmission network between the two neighboring countries. The station boasts a total production capacity of 1400 megawatts, which is transmitted via two main underwater power lines across the Mediterranean Sea. These two lines were completed in two successive phases, with the first line commissioned in 1997 and the second finalized in 2006.

This complex electrical interconnection process is facilitated by the sophisticated “REMO” (REd Eléctrica de Marruecos-España) network, which connects the Moroccan “Ferdioua” station to its Spanish counterpart “Tarifa” located in southern Spain. This vital link is established by three high-quality submarine cables extending over a distance of approximately 29 kilometers and reaching depths of up to 620 meters below the surface of the strategic Strait of Gibraltar.

The “Ferdioua” station is equipped with an advanced and integrated energy flow monitoring and control system, relying on the latest technologies in high-precision sensing and sophisticated protection systems. This high-level technical equipment enables operators to quickly and effectively manage any potential emergency or malfunction that may occur on the shared electrical grid between the two countries, ensuring an immediate and appropriate response to the energy demands and needs of both shores.

This strategic energy interconnection between Morocco and Spain allows for the immediate and flexible exchange of electrical power between the two countries, which significantly enhances the stability of both national electricity grids and noticeably reduces the risks of prolonged or sudden power outages, especially during periods of high grid stress or in times of emergencies and crises. During the recent power outage crisis in Spain, the “Ferdioua” station proved to be a truly vital electrical “safety valve” serving the interests of both nations.
