Macron Praises King Mohammed VI for Launching the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Project: “Long Live Moroccan-French Friendship”

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his admiration for King Mohammed VI’s initiative to enhance Morocco’s rail transport infrastructure through the launch of the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail project, which the King officially inaugurated yesterday, Thursday, in the capital, Rabat.

In messages shared on his official accounts on X and Instagram, Macron praised the positive momentum of bilateral relations, declaring, “Long live the friendship between Morocco and France,” and expressing pride in the Franco-Moroccan cooperation, which he described as “progressing rapidly.”

The French President noted that this project is the result of cooperation and partnerships signed between companies from both countries during his official visit to Morocco last October.

The new high-speed line, stretching approximately 430 kilometers, is a practical translation of King Mohammed VI’s vision to develop Morocco’s railway network within a national strategy aimed at promoting sustainable and low-carbon mass transportation solutions.

The project will connect the cities of Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech, as well as the Rabat and Casablanca airports. It is expected to significantly reduce travel times: the journey between Tangier and Rabat will take just one hour, between Tangier and Casablanca one hour and forty minutes, and between Tangier and Marrakech two hours and forty minutes — saving over two hours compared to current travel times.

Additionally, the project will enable travel between Rabat and Mohammed V Airport in just 35 minutes and provide service to the Grand Stadium in Benslimane. It will also allow travel from Fez to Marrakech in under four hours using a combination of conventional and high-speed rail.

The project’s execution relies on the expertise of major international players, including French company Alstom for high-speed train manufacturing, Spanish company CAF specialized in intercity trains, and South Korean Hyundai Rotem, with preferential financing terms that open new prospects for strengthening Morocco’s railway transport capabilities.
