Banque Populaire to Fès News: Morocco is a Digital Target, and These are Our Recommendations for Protecting Bank Accounts

In an exclusive statement to Fès News, a responsible source at Banque Populaire confirmed that Morocco has become a clear target for increasing attempts of cyberattacks related to phishing, which primarily aim to steal the banking data of citizens and companies through fake messages that impersonate trusted financial or official institutions.

The same source explained that these suspicious messages are sent via email or messaging applications, and they prompt the recipient to click on fraudulent links in order to enter their banking details or personal information, which poses a significant risk to accounts and balances.

The official pointed out that a number of customers have already received suspicious messages claiming to be from Banque Populaire or other institutions, asking them to interact urgently to update data or confirm the account, methods he described as “dangerous” and “recurring.”

Banque Populaire warned against the following signs that may indicate a phishing message:

  • The presence of linguistic or spelling errors in the text.
  • The use of phrases that suggest danger or urgency.
  • Requesting confidential information such as passwords or card numbers.
  • Unfamiliar electronic links or those ending in suspicious domains.

The source emphasized that the bank never asks its customers to enter their personal or banking information via electronic links, stressing the need to ignore these messages and not interact with them under any circumstances.

The bank called on customers to contact the customer relationship center on the number 2121 if they have any doubts or wish to report a suspicious message. It also recommended downloading and reading the guide “For Safe Use of Online Banking Services” available on the bank’s official website:
