Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, confirmed in his statements on Tuesday in the House of Advisors that the recent rains have had a positive impact on the water situation in the Kingdom. He noted that these rainfalls were especially beneficial for the pastures that support the national livestock.
Baraka explained that the dam filling rate has reached 49.44% so far, thanks to the rainfall that Morocco has experienced since September, adding that the reservoirs now hold 6.61 billion cubic meters of water. He also pointed out that the new dams established since 2022 have contributed an additional 280 million cubic meters.
Regarding snow, the minister mentioned that the snow-covered area in the Kingdom has reached 34,000 square kilometers, compared to less than 10,000 square kilometers last year.
He emphasized that Morocco has moved from severe water stress to mild water stress, despite the fact that rainfall is still 25% lower than average levels. He clarified that the rains and snowfalls since last September have contributed to the water supplies for the dams, totaling 3.785 million cubic meters.
Regarding drinking water, Baraka confirmed that the supply of drinking water for at least a year and a half is now guaranteed in all water basins, except for the southern provinces, which have a special status.
