Inawn Valley in Oued Amelil Under the Weight of Pollution: Olive Mill Waste Threatens the Ecosystem and Public Health

Inawn Valley in Oued Amelil, located in the Taza region, is suffering from severe environmental pollution due to the random disposal of solid waste along its banks and in its stream, which distorts the natural beauty of the valley and negatively impacts the local ecosystem, according to local sources.

According to the same sources, the disposal of waste from uncontrolled olive mills into the valley’s stream has exacerbated the environmental situation. These wastes contribute to the depletion of dissolved oxygen in the water as they decompose, which negatively affects aquatic life, as well as the quality of both surface and groundwater that the local population relies on for agricultural and domestic purposes.

Despite previous efforts that resulted in the launch of the Coral Collection Project, which had a limited role in reducing pollution, local actors have expressed astonishment at the ongoing pollution of the valley’s water. These actors have called on the relevant authorities to take urgent measures to stop the sources of pollution and organize a cleanup campaign to restore the valley’s cleanliness, according to local sources.

Local sources have pointed out that civil society in Oued Amelil is demanding strict oversight of olive mills and the imposition of penalties on violators. They have also called for awareness campaigns to educate the local community on the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of the valley and providing sustainable solutions for waste disposal.
