University Student Faces Charges for Spreading False News About the Alleged Rape of Students in “guigo”

Elements of the Royal Gendarmerie at the Missour Judicial Center referred a university student from Fez to the Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in the city on Wednesday, following his involvement in spreading false news about the alleged rape of students in the “guigo” area.

According to local sources, the Public Prosecutor decided to prosecute the accused on charges of “distributing false allegations or facts, with the intent to harm the private life of individuals or defame them,” in accordance with Article 447 of the Penal Code.

A lawyer from the city of Missour told that the Penal Code punishes with imprisonment from one to three years and a fine ranging from 2,000 to 20,000 dirhams anyone who, by any means, including information systems, broadcasts or distributes a composition consisting of a person’s statements or image, without their consent, or broadcasts or distributes false allegations or facts with the intent to harm the private life of individuals or defame them.

The arrest of the individual in question came following a judicial investigation ordered by the Public Prosecutor in Missour regarding a post on the social media platform “Facebook,” which contained false information about the alleged rape of students in the “guigo” area.

The arrested student claimed in his post that a gendarme and another person were accused of indecent assault and raping 14 secondary school students, and that all stages of the rape took place in the same house. The post spread widely among social media users, and was circulated by national and international websites, before the investigation revealed that only one student was raped by her cousin when she was 12 years old.

The arrested student confessed, according to available information, to publishing the post on his personal Facebook page, without providing an explanation or motives for his actions. He is expected to be referred to the competent Public Prosecutor to take the necessary legal measures against him.
