More than five years after the enactment of Law No. 62.17 on administrative guardianship over collective communities and the management of their properties, the issue of women’s access to collective land remains unresolved in the Majjat Bredia commune, Meknes province. According to informed sources, some representatives of the collective community persist in refusing to implement the law’s provisions.
According to information obtained by Fes News, a group of women from the collective community has been actively fighting for their right to benefit from communal lands on an equal basis with men. However, they continue to face numerous obstacles due to the persistence of patriarchal mindsets and the reliance on traditional customs for land distribution—practices that clearly contradict the legal provisions ensuring gender equality in accessing collective community assets.
The same sources indicate that this situation persists due to the complicity of certain elected officials and the silence of local authorities, who have yet to take decisive action to enforce the law. This has led to growing frustration among women who find themselves deprived of a right guaranteed by legislation but not upheld in practice.
In response, the women of the Majjat Bredia commune are calling on the relevant authorities, including territorial officials and decision-makers, to intervene immediately to ensure the law is respected. They demand an end to discriminatory practices that hinder their access to collective land, reinforcing the principles of equality and social justice enshrined in national legislation.
