Niger has officially announced its withdrawal from the International Organization of La Francophonie, according to a memorandum issued by the Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 17. Nigerien diplomatic missions abroad have been informed of this decision to notify the relevant authorities in their host countries.
This decision was made without any official justification from Niger, but it follows the suspension of its membership in the organization after the military coup that took place in the country on July 26, 2023. Niger had previously halted its cooperation with the organization, which was established in 1970 and includes 93 French-speaking countries, in a move seen as part of its efforts to strengthen its political, diplomatic, and economic sovereignty.
It is worth noting that the International Organization of La Francophonie aims to promote the French language and French-speaking cultures, as well as to support cooperation among member states in various fields. Niger’s withdrawal comes at a time when the region is undergoing significant political and economic transformations, raising questions about the impact of this decision on the country’s international relations and the future of its cooperation with Francophone nations.
