In an open meeting this week, the Foundation of Al-Faqih Al-Tetouani hosted Mohamed Ouzine, Secretary-General of the Popular Movement Party, who spoke candidly about the current economic situation in Morocco and the challenges the government is facing amid ongoing inflation. Ouzine stated that the government had promised to reduce inflation to 3%, but the reality shows figures much higher, with inflation reaching unprecedented levels, up to 20% in some sectors. This surge is a result of difficult economic conditions, such as drought and rising market prices.
Ouzine added that the government has failed to deliver on its promises regarding inflation, emphasizing that the data presented by the opposition is based on scientific facts and reliable indicators from official institutions, reflecting the harsh economic reality that Moroccan citizens are enduring. He said: “Honesty is reflected in the numbers we present, not in political theatrics.” He pointed out that the opposition relies on the data and indicators provided by official institutions as trustworthy sources of information.
Ouzine also discussed the government’s support distribution policy, asserting that the aid does not reach local farmers but rather goes to foreign companies. This, he argued, exacerbates the suffering of Moroccan farmers, who are facing rising production costs due to inflation and drought. He criticized the government’s refusal to engage with the opposition and listen to its proposals, which, he claimed, leads to worsening economic and social crises without effective solutions.
Regarding the finance law, Ouzine criticized the measures included in it, noting that the government had abandoned support for local farmers in favor of foreign investors. He stated that this approach harms the national economy and increases the gap between social classes.
Ouzine concluded his statement by saying: “We in the opposition work scientifically and objectively based on numbers and indicators, but the government turns a deaf ear to our demands and refuses to engage with us.” He emphasized that the government must be more open to dialogue and acknowledge its mistakes to prevent further harm to citizens.
This statement highlights the growing tensions between the government and the opposition amid the difficult economic conditions in Morocco, raising questions about the government’s ability to fulfill its promises and implement the necessary reforms to tackle inflation and ease the burden on citizens.
