Larache: Three Jewish Monuments Added to National Heritage List

The Ministry of Culture has issued new decisions to register three Jewish monuments in the city of Larache on the national heritage list. These decisions, published in the Official Bulletin on February 20, came in response to a request submitted by the Moroccan Israelite Community in January 2024.

The decisions include the registration of three prominent Jewish landmarks in Larache: the “Kahal” Synagogue, a place of worship spanning 181 square meters, built in 1842 and restored and reopened in 2022. Additionally, the decisions cover the city’s Jewish cemetery, the “Mikveh” bathhouse, and a traditional oven.

According to Law No. 22-80 concerning the preservation of historical monuments, sites, inscriptions, artistic objects, and antiquities, it is prohibited to make any modifications to classified monuments without notifying the supervising ministry at least six months before the start of any work.

This decision is part of efforts to preserve Morocco’s cultural heritage in all its components and promote the cultural diversity that characterizes the Kingdom. It also reflects the growing interest in protecting historical and religious landmarks that form an integral part of Morocco’s rich and diverse identity.

This step is a significant addition to the national heritage list, highlighting Morocco’s Jewish heritage and reaffirming the historical coexistence among the various components of Moroccan society. These measures are expected to enhance cultural tourism in the region and attract visitors interested in exploring the diverse aspects of Moroccan heritage.
