Morocco Mourns the Loss of Mohamed Benaissa: A Diplomat and Cultural Pioneer

Morocco has lost a prominent figure with the passing of Mohamed Benaissa, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Culture, as well as the founder of the Asilah Cultural Festival, which has brought together leading intellectuals and artists from around the world for over four decades.

Benaissa’s academic journey began in journalism at the University of Minnesota, where he built a strong knowledge base that later paved the way for his entry into the media industry. He managed a newspaper affiliated with the National Rally of Independents (RNI) party before his political ambitions led him to high-ranking positions. He served as Morocco’s ambassador to the United States before taking on key ministerial roles in diplomacy and culture under both King Hassan II and King Mohammed VI.

His most enduring legacy lies in the cultural sphere, through his founding of the Asilah Cultural Festival alongside the late artist Mohamed Melehi. This initiative transformed Asilah into a global platform for intellectual dialogue and artistic expression, renowned for its annual mural paintings adorning the old city’s streets and its role as a hub for political and cultural discussions on contemporary issues and future outlooks.

Benaissa was not merely the festival’s founder; he remained deeply engaged in its activities, personally overseeing its events, interacting with guests, and advocating for its institutionalization to ensure its continuity for generations to come.

With his passing, Morocco bids farewell to a man who dedicated his life to diplomacy and culture, leaving behind a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

On this sad occasion, Fes News extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and admirers of the late Mohamed Benaissa, praying that he may rest in eternal peace and that his loved ones find strength and solace.
