Fez, Morocco – February 19, 2024
Young Walid Al-Houdari, aged 25, is in critical condition after suffering third-degree burns as a result of setting himself on fire in an act of protest. He was admitted to the Hassan II University Hospital in Fez, where he has been in the trauma ward since Wednesday, February 13.
According to Al-Houdari’s family, this act of protest was a response to the inadequate attention given to a complaint he had filed at the local police station in the Msouda district of Fez. A local branch office conducted a field visit to the hospital to assess the situation, where hospital administration confirmed that they are unable to provide the necessary care due to a lack of available resources.
Efforts were made to transfer him to a hospital in Casablanca, which is equipped to handle such critical cases. However, hospital officials stated that there are no available beds due to ongoing maintenance work.
In light of this, an urgent appeal has been made to the Minister of Health and Social Protection to intervene immediately to save Walid Al-Houdari’s life. The appeal highlighted that Article 20 of the Moroccan Constitution affirms every individual’s right to life, while Article 31 stipulates the state’s responsibility to ensure citizens’ access to healthcare.
The appeal emphasized that any delay in providing appropriate treatment could endanger Walid’s life, calling for swift and effective actions to prevent the recurrence of past tragedies.
This case raises questions about the adequacy of available health services and how authorities handle emergency situations requiring urgent intervention.
