After 17 Years of Delay, Residents of Oulad Al-Maarouf Demand Investigation into Saïs Urban Hub Stagnation

The residents of Douar Oulad Al-Maarouf staged a protest this morning, Tuesday, February 18, 2025, in front of the Ain Chqef Municipality in the Moulay Yacoub province. They called for an urgent investigation into the prolonged delay in the implementation of the Saïs Urban Hub project, which was commissioned by King Mohammed VI in 2007 but has seen no significant progress since.

According to the protesters, they have been suffering for 17 years from deteriorating housing conditions, still living in dilapidated homes amid repeated unfulfilled promises. They stressed that the responsible authorities have failed to meet their commitments, leaving them in a state of uncertainty without any real solutions on the ground.

Many demonstrators highlighted that their marginalized area, suffering from poor infrastructure, is located at the main entrance to Fez. They warned that this could negatively impact the city’s image as it prepares to host major sporting events. Despite the significance of these events and their impact on Fez’s reputation, the relevant authorities remain absent in finding concrete solutions to improve living conditions and advance the stalled project.

The protesters affirmed that they would not back down from their demands and would continue their demonstrations until the authorities take action and implement practical measures to secure their right to decent housing. They urged for the acceleration of the long-delayed project, which has been in limbo for nearly two decades.

The demonstration concluded with chants demanding accountability for those responsible for the delays and calling on officials to take decisive action to complete the project and provide a suitable living environment for the affected residents.
