Ifrane at the Heart of the New Tourism Strategy: A Government Plan to Transform It into a Global Ecotourism Destination

On Monday, February 17, 2025, the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy unveiled an ambitious vision to develop the Ifrane region as a premier ecotourism hub. The minister emphasized that the ministry is working in coordination with various local and regional stakeholders, primarily the Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development, to implement developmental projects aimed at enhancing the region’s natural assets and establishing it as a leading tourist destination.

The government official highlighted that current efforts focus on promoting the mountainous and forested areas through the creation of specialized tourist trails that cater to visitors’ needs while aligning with sustainable development principles. Some of these projects are already underway with joint funding from the Fes-Meknes Regional Council. These environmental development programs include rehabilitating several tourist circuits and improving the infrastructure necessary for this type of tourism.

During his address, the minister underscored the importance of leveraging the Ifrane National Park as a key pillar for boosting ecotourism. He announced the launch of a call for tenders to conduct a specialized study on enhancing the park’s value and preserving its biodiversity. This initiative aligns with the national tourism strategy for 2023-2026, which aims to position national parks as major tourist attractions in Morocco.

In addition, the minister noted that the government is mobilizing the necessary financial resources to implement these planned programs, with a focus on attracting investors interested in environmentally sustainable tourism projects. He stated that calls for expressions of interest are open to the private sector to contribute to developing the region’s tourism infrastructure, ensuring the long-term sustainability and appeal of these projects.

Beyond ecotourism, the minister also stressed the importance of preserving and promoting Ifrane’s historical and archaeological sites. He outlined a comprehensive vision that integrates the cultural and heritage aspects of the region into the tourism strategy. The ministry is working on new programs to enhance the visitor experience at these sites by providing key attractions that will boost Ifrane’s reputation both nationally and internationally.

In conclusion, the minister affirmed that the promotion of ecotourism in Ifrane is not just a temporary project but a strategic commitment that requires the combined efforts of all stakeholders, including local authorities, investors, and civil society. The ultimate goal is to establish Ifrane as a model for sustainable development and a prime destination for nature lovers and ecotourism enthusiasts in Morocco and beyond.
