On February 14 and 15, 2025, the city of Fes hosted an international symposium titled “Procedural Laws in Reform: Challenges of the Right to Defense and the Protection of Rights.” The event was organized by the International Union of Lawyers, in partnership with the Fes Bar Association and the Moroccan Association of Bar Councils.
Held at the Marriott Hotel in Fes, the symposium brought together a distinguished group of legal and judicial figures, including the President of the Supreme Council of the Judicial Authority, Mohamed Abdennabaoui, the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, the Attorney General, Hassan Daki, and the President of the National Human Rights Council, Amina Bouayach, along with several bar presidents, lawyers, and university professors.
The discussions during the symposium focused on the challenges facing the right to defense amid ongoing reforms to procedural laws. The event provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and expertise among different legal systems and to promote dialogue on best practices in this field.
Important issues related to enhancing legal safeguards and achieving prompt justice were also addressed. Professor Fatiha Echaouch highlighted the need to review current laws to make them fairer for vulnerable groups, particularly women survivors of violence, emphasizing the importance of integrating a gender perspective into legislative reforms.
The symposium concluded with an emphasis on the importance of comprehensive legal system reform, based on effective public policies that ensure the protection of vulnerable groups and strengthen trust in the justice system. This symposium is considered a significant milestone in discussing ways to enhance defense rights and achieve justice in Morocco.
