As part of the preparations for the holy month of Ramadan, the Meknes mayor announced on Thursday, February 13, the need to intensify monitoring operations in the markets to ensure the quality and availability of foodstuffs, and to monitor price stability to fight speculation and monopoly.
During a meeting to discuss the necessary measures to ensure the availability of high-quality products, the Meknes mayor emphasized the importance of monitoring markets on a daily basis, and stressed the need to use analytical tools to monitor any unjustified rise in prices, and if this occurs, the authorities must intervene to identify and address the causes, he pointed out the importance of the commitment to post price lists in front of traders to ensure their compliance, and called for comparing wholesale and installment prices to detect any possible irregularities.
Regarding market practices, the official stressed the need to monitor the weight of gas cylinders at wholesalers and retailers to minimize fraud. A new initiative to offer affordable fish in refrigerated trucks during Ramadan was also announced, making it easier for citizens to buy frozen fish at set prices and without middlemen.
For its part, the Directorate of Economic Affairs and Coordination of the Meknes Municipality reported that the joint regional quality and price control committee recently recorded 233 violations and seized and destroyed 122 tons of foodstuffs unfit for consumption. In addition, 210 written warnings were issued to traders, and 50 samples of products were sent for laboratory analysis.
These measures come within the framework of reinforcing the royal directives, which aim to provide optimal conditions for the month of Ramadan by supplying markets with abundant products and strengthening monitoring mechanisms to ensure stability Prices and protecting the health and safety of citizens, as well as consumers’ rights and purchasing power.
