During a press conference, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Ahmed Bouari, emphasized the crucial role of Morocco’s agricultural sector and the need to support farmers and professionals in light of challenges related to water resources and agricultural product prices.
Bouari stated that agriculture remains the backbone of the national economy, noting that water management relies on minimal available reservoir levels, as the majority of water resources are allocated to drinking water, industry, and tourism. Despite limited water availability, Morocco has achieved significant agricultural production, outperforming some countries with abundant water resources but lower productivity.
Regarding the poultry sector, the minister confirmed that production has remained stable compared to the previous year, although rising chicken prices have impacted consumer purchasing power. He highlighted ongoing meetings with industry professionals to enhance production and stabilize prices in the coming months.
Bouari also unveiled a new initiative aimed at providing affordable fish, particularly ahead of Ramadan, when demand for certain varieties such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel increases. The ministry is working to ensure the availability of high-quality seafood at prices accessible to consumers.
Concluding the press conference, the minister underscored the importance of supporting farmers, engineers, and stakeholders in the agricultural sector. He stressed that the development of agriculture requires collective efforts and sustainable solutions to ensure national food security.
