Civil society organizations in the Tounfite region, supported by the First Network of Local Associations in Boumia, have renewed their call for the establishment of an Amazigh Studies department at Sultan Moulay Ismail University in Meknes. This demand aligns with the country’s academic and legal transformations, particularly in accordance with Organic Law No. 16-26, which regulates the implementation of Amazigh as an official language.
According to an informed source, these organizations have sent an official letter to the university president and the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, urging the inclusion of this department within the available academic programs. The request considers the needs of students from the region who currently have to travel to other cities to pursue studies in this field due to the lack of a local alternative that respects their linguistic and cultural identity.
Mohamed Akoujil, an activist interested in the matter, emphasized that the absence of an Amazigh Studies department at Sultan Moulay Ismail University is a major obstacle for students wishing to specialize in this discipline. He noted that some students are forced to shift their academic paths toward unrelated fields or bear the financial burden of relocating to distant cities.
Meanwhile, historian Mohamed Zeroual stated that this demand is not merely a local issue but an academic necessity on a national scale. He highlighted the importance of integrating this specialization into Moroccan universities that have yet to establish formal programs in Amazigh Studies. Zeroual stressed that Sultan Moulay Ismail University, given its oversight of provinces with a significant Amazigh-speaking population, should provide an educational offering that upholds the principle of equal opportunities and enables students to pursue research and studies connected to their cultural identity.
This demand comes amid growing academic interest in the Amazigh component within Moroccan universities. Advocates argue that incorporating this specialization across various institutions is essential for enriching the national cultural landscape and fostering linguistic and intellectual diversity within the Moroccan higher education system.
