Moroccan youth unemployment on the rise And the drought is getting worse!

The unemployment rate in Morocco rose slightly during 2024 to 13.3%, compared to 13% in the previous year, according to a report issued by the High Commission for Planning, mainly due to the loss of thousands of jobs in the agricultural sector due to the ongoing drought that the country is suffering from for the seventh consecutive year.

The report stated that the number of unemployed people in Morocco amounted to 1.63 million out of a total population of 37 million, and the agricultural sector alone recorded a loss of 137,000 jobs, which exacerbated the employment crisis.

In contrast, the services sector contributed the most to job creation, followed by the industrial and construction sectors.

The report revealed that youth unemployment continued to rise, reaching 36.7% compared to 35.8% last year. Unemployment among university graduates reached 19.6 percent, while unemployment among women reached 19.4 percent, compared to 19.7 percent and 18.3 percent in the previous year.

The Moroccan government has been criticized by the opposition for not fulfilling its promises to create jobs. In a move to contain the crisis, the government announced last month a $1.4 billion plan to boost employment, including supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and stimulating youth employment, in an attempt to mitigate the repercussions of the economic crisis.
