Government’s Efforts to Combat Inflation Highlighted by Spokesperson Mustapha Baetass

During a press conference held yesterday evening following the government council meeting, Mustapha Baetass, the official spokesperson for the government, emphasized the substantial efforts made by the government to address inflation and its impact on citizens, despite the accumulating economic challenges facing the country.

Baetass noted that the government respects and relies on reports from constitutional institutions as references for shaping its policies. He pointed to the recent report by the High Commission for Planning, which showed a noticeable decrease in Morocco’s inflation rates.

The spokesperson highlighted the government’s actions to combat inflation, including supporting production chains and inputs for the most consumed food products, providing subsidies for the transport sector, and managing the Compensation Fund. These measures, he explained, yielded positive results, particularly during sensitive periods such as Ramadan, when essential goods were sufficiently available in markets.

Baetass also referenced meetings held by the Ministry of Interior with relevant sectors and the Ministry of Finance, which confirmed the stable supply situation in markets, alongside intensified inspection campaigns to ensure the availability of high-quality, standard-compliant products.

He provided data reflecting the government’s extensive monitoring and enforcement efforts. In 2024, over 346,000 production, storage, and wholesale and retail units were inspected, resulting in more than 20,000 violations being recorded. Warnings were issued, and legal actions were taken against violators. During this period, 110 tons of non-compliant or unfit-for-consumption products were seized and destroyed.

In just the first three weeks of January, 2,166 units were inspected, 1,194 violations were detected, and approximately 216.5 tons of spoiled products were confiscated.

Addressing the country’s challenges, Baetass highlighted consecutive years of drought and the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated the inflation crisis. Nevertheless, the government managed to take proactive measures to stabilize prices and ensure the availability of essential goods for citizens.

In closing, Baetass reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing its efforts to combat inflation, support citizens’ purchasing power, and closely monitor economic indicators while adapting policies to local and international developments.
