The Tanger Med port complex processed over 10.24 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in 2024, marking an 18.8% increase compared to 2023, according to a statement from the Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA) released on Wednesday. This performance is attributed to the trust and commitment of port operators and shipping lines, as well as the high level of productivity achieved by all teams involved.
This remarkable result was also made possible by the enhancement of certain facilities, the commissioning of new equipment, and the optimization of maritime calls, which helped reduce waiting and maneuvering times.
In terms of roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) activity, the port handled 516,842 trucks in 2024, reflecting an 8.1% growth compared to the previous year. TMPA noted that this traffic was primarily driven by industrial products, which grew by 6.8%, and agri-food products, which increased by 7.2%.
Regarding passenger activity, the statement indicated that 3,047,387 passengers transited through the Tanger Med port complex in 2024, representing a 13% increase from 2023. The Marhaba campaign, which is the main transit period for passengers, was conducted under optimal conditions during its 2024 edition.
Additionally, the two vehicle terminals at the port complex handled a total of 600,872 vehicles in 2024, marking a 4% increase compared to the previous year. This traffic includes 368,843 export vehicles produced by Renault factories in Melloussa and SOMACA in Casablanca, 170,519 vehicles exported by Stellantis in Kenitra, along with transshipment and import vehicles.
Solid bulk traffic remained stable with a slight growth of 1% compared to the previous year, totaling 584,945 tons processed. Meanwhile, hydrocarbon volumes reached 7,640,524 tons, showing a decrease of 22% compared to 2023.
This decline is primarily attributed to the transfer of some imports to newly commissioned storage facilities at other Moroccan ports.
Furthermore, the Tanger Med port complex handled a total of 142 million tons of goods in 2024, an increase of 16.2% compared to the previous year.
The statement also noted that there were 17,479 maritime calls recorded at the port complex in 2024, reflecting a growth of 3.42% from 2023. Among these calls were 1,217 mega-ships (over 290 meters long), representing an increase of 13.74% compared to the previous year.
These results reflect the collective mobilization of port operators, local authorities, and administrations in managing daily operations at the port to support significant changes in global maritime trade.
