Tunisia is making concerted efforts to restore diplomatic relations with Morocco after three years of estrangement resulting from President Kais Saied’s reception of the leader of the separatist Polisario Front, Ibrahim Ghali. Diplomatic sources have revealed that there are initiatives underway to reinstate both ambassadors to their posts as part of efforts to turn a new page between the two countries.
Despite these efforts, Tunisia faces challenges related to its foreign policy stance on the principle of “self-determination,” as well as President Saied’s participation in events alongside the separatist leader, which has drawn criticism from Morocco. These steps indicate a desire among Tunisian decision-makers to move past disagreements and restore the historical ties between the two nations, although difficulties persist due to the current Tunisian leadership’s direction.
In the summer of 2022, Tunisia angered Rabat when President Saied welcomed Ibrahim Ghali on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held in Tunisia. Morocco deemed this move “hostile and unjustified,” prompting it to withdraw its ambassador in protest, a move that was reciprocated by Tunisia.
These developments highlight the importance of reassessing relations between Morocco and Tunisia, as both sides seek to overcome past crises and build a shared future.
