The Women’s Organization of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) in Fes organized an important seminar on the recent developments concerning Morocco’s Family Code, a significant royal initiative aimed at strengthening the rights of Moroccan families. The seminar opened with a reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to providing effective solutions on issues crucial to the Moroccan people, emphasizing that PAM will not falter in addressing these critical matters.
The seminar highlighted the royal directives given by His Majesty the King regarding the need to form a specialized committee to work on amendments to the Family Code. A comprehensive report was presented to His Majesty, outlining the main features of the anticipated amendments, which are expected to be drafted into a bill for parliamentary review and approval. Speakers emphasized the King’s personal follow-up on this important reform, praising his dedication to ensuring the reforms benefit all components of the Moroccan family.
It was noted that the reform of the Family Code should proceed free from narrow political approaches and should take into account the legal developments since the first Family Code (known as the Personal Status Code) in 1957, its amendments in 2004, and the new adjustments, which will integrate recent legal advancements and jurisprudential contributions that serve the family’s interests. The reform is centered on strengthening the rights of all family members—men, women, and children.
Additionally, it was emphasized that the reform should align with the principles of the Maliki school of thought, as well as other schools of jurisprudence that could serve the best interests of the family. Participants discussed the importance of ensuring that the new laws strike a balance between responsibilities, rights, and duties, placing the well-being of the family at the forefront.
In conclusion, the seminar participants stressed that these legal amendments must be based on Sharia principles and jurisprudential reasoning while considering the social developments of Moroccan society. They pointed out that Morocco has made significant progress in this area, which has led many Islamic, Arab, and even European countries to inquire about Morocco’s Family Code experience, viewing it as a model in promoting women’s and family rights in line with Islamic principles.
