Saad Akesbi to “Fes News”: Gas Price Increases Threaten Citizens and Distributors Alike

In an exclusive interview with Fes News last weekend, Saad Akesbi , President of the Federation of Gas Distributors and Depot Owners in the Fes-Meknes region, addressed the ongoing situation regarding the rising prices of gas cylinders in Morocco. He discussed the phased subsidy removal program, initially planned to unfold in three stages, starting with a 10 MAD increase, followed by two additional increments of the same amount, eventually raising the price of a cylinder to 70 MAD.

Akesbi noted that the first increase of 10 MAD has already proven the difficulty of implementing subsequent hikes under the current economic conditions. Rising prices of essential goods are placing an additional burden on citizens’ purchasing power, especially with the holy month of Ramadan approaching, a time when gas consumption typically surges.

He further emphasized that the proposed price increases would also severely impact distributors. Profit margins are unlikely to rise proportionately, while additional taxes and higher operating costs will exacerbate financial pressures. Many distributors may find themselves in unsustainable positions as costs exceed what they can afford. This, in turn, could have a ripple effect on consumers already grappling with inflation and the sharp rise in the prices of other commodities, such as poultry.

Akesbi raised several questions regarding the feasibility and consequences of these increases. He stressed the importance of exploring alternatives to avoid harming the local economy. He suggested postponing or halting the planned price hikes and adopting other mechanisms to safeguard both citizens and distributors in the current economic climate.
