Altercations and Assaults at the Bus Station in Fes

The bus station in Fes witnessed verbal altercations and physical fights this afternoon, Saturday, January 4, 2025, between a broker and the son of a transport company owner, resulting in the latter sustaining punches to the face and eye. The incident occurred amid a backdrop of extortion faced by bus operators from “kourtya,” who obstruct travelers and demand bribes of up to 10% of the bus’s revenue when leaving the station.

It is worth noting that these kourtya exploit forged documents as management commitments from some transport operators who refuse to regulate and organize the sector. They also forcibly prevent travelers from accessing ticket counters to purchase their tickets, using unofficial tickets that bear neither the company’s name nor the treasury stamp.

Had it not been for the timely intervention of security personnel present at the station, matters could have escalated into a major disaster. The security response team from the Ben Dabbab Ain Qadous area also contributed to efforts to combat this phenomenon that tarnishes both the station’s reputation and that of the city of Fes, especially with two significant sporting events approaching.

Citizens are expressing their concerns regarding these incidents, calling for increased security efforts to combat these black spots in public facilities, such as the bus station, which serves as a gateway to Fes for tourists and visitors.
