Gaza: Seven Killed in Israeli Strike on Hospital

The Gaza Civil Defense announced on Sunday that at least seven people were killed in a strike on a hospital that, according to the Israeli army, was housing fighters from the Palestinian Hamas movement and was no longer functional.

“An Israeli strike on the upper floor of al-Wafaa hospital in central Gaza City (north) resulted in seven martyrs and several wounded, some in serious condition,” said a statement from the Civil Defense of the Palestinian territory, which has been the scene of more than a year of war with Israel.

The Israeli army stated that it had carried out a “targeted strike” against a Hamas anti-aircraft defense unit that was allegedly using the facility as a command center “to plan and launch terrorist attacks” against its troops. “The building is not currently being used as a hospital,” it added.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Health of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip asserted that the facility was “partially functional”. Munir al-Barsh, the Director-General of the Ministry, told AFP, “Patients with physical disabilities are being treated there.” He added, “The hospital had been restored and was preparing to receive patients. It could have reopened normally in the coming days if it had not been struck today (Sunday) by Israel.”

This strike on al-Wafaa comes in the wake of a major Israeli operation that, according to the World Health Organization, put the last large operational hospital in northern Gaza, Kamal Adwan, “out of service”.

The Israeli army arrested the director of this facility, Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, whom they suspect of being a Hamas militant.

Israel has intensified its ground and air offensive in northern Gaza since October 6 to prevent Hamas fighters from regrouping, according to its claims. The army regularly accuses these fighters of using hospitals as bases to prepare and launch attacks against its troops, which the Islamist movement denies.
