Abdeltif Loudyi, the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, participated on Thursday in Madrid in the 20th meeting of defense ministers from member countries of the “5+5 Defense” Initiative.
This meeting provided an opportunity to assess the cooperation activities carried out in 2024 and establish the action plan for 2025. In his speech, Loudyi emphasized that Morocco has consistently demonstrated, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, its full commitment to various initiatives aimed at maintaining peace, stability, and security coupled with economic and social development in the region.
Highlighting the security challenges facing the region, the Minister Delegate affirmed that the Kingdom remains ready for any form of bilateral and multilateral cooperation aimed at combating illegal immigration and terrorist threats. He added that Morocco advocates for a comprehensive approach based on shared responsibility that addresses these risks in a solidary and effective manner.
Loudyi pointed out the need to deploy partnership strategies and provide realistic co-development programs involving countries on both shores of the Western Mediterranean. He also commended Spain’s valuable efforts for the success of its 2024 presidency of the Initiative and the contributions of member countries in making this Initiative a privileged forum for multilateral cooperation.
Regarding the 2024 action review, the Minister Delegate expressed satisfaction with the results achieved thanks to the commitment of member countries and the excellent work accomplished by the steering committee under the Spanish presidency. In this regard, Morocco welcomed the research results on “the impact of climate change on security dynamics in the Mediterranean region.”
Concerning the 2025 action plan, heads of delegations from member countries of the “5+5 Defense” Initiative highlighted the richness and diversity of the plan, reflecting the determination and commitment of member countries to maintain the dynamism and vitality of this Initiative. In this context, Morocco will provide all necessary support for the implementation of activities scheduled for 2025, particularly within the framework of the research titled “Maritime Security in the Western Mediterranean: The Contribution of the 5+5 Defense Initiative.”
Tunisia will assume the rotating presidency of the “5+5 Defense” Initiative for the year 2025.
