The President of Al-Qarawiyyin University, Mr. Amal Jalal, confirmed in a lecture delivered yesterday in Fez that the ancient university continues its scientific and educational mission uninterrupted since its establishment 12 centuries ago.
During his inaugural lecture titled “Al-Qarawiyyin University: Twelve Centuries of Scientific and Knowledge Radiance,” organized by the Moroccan Heritage Foundation, Jalal explained that the university’s continuity lies in its openness and the diversity of its scientific system.
The university president highlighted Fez’s pivotal role as a civilizational meeting point between Andalusia, the East, and Africa, serving as a major station for the movement of scholars and jurists between various Islamic centers such as Cordoba, Cairo, Baghdad, Damascus, and Timbuktu.
He added that the university has maintained its tradition of granting degrees to graduates since its establishment until today, affirming that the arrival of scholars from Andalusia and the East to study there was considered a significant event in their academic journey.
Jalal emphasized the attention paid by successive Moroccan monarchs, from the Idrisids to the Alawites, to this academic edifice through continuous support and curriculum development, considering it a cultural beacon that contributed to forming the country’s scientific, religious, and cultural elites.
This lecture was part of the opening activities of the 2024-2025 cultural and scientific season of the Moroccan Heritage Foundation, and is part of a series of meetings aimed at documenting and preserving Moroccan heritage and enhancing intergenerational communication.
