The Moroccan city of Fez witnessed a dangerous incident last night when a fire broke out in an abandoned building on Abdulaziz Boutaleb Street in the Agdal district, near Al-Nour building. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM.
Local sources reported that the abandoned building was housing some homeless individuals and stray dogs. The fire quickly spread to the upper floors of the building, causing one of the windows on the third floor to ignite in an apartment occupied by an elderly woman who was asleep at the time of the incident.
Upon the outbreak of the fire, neighbors quickly contacted civil protection and security services, which responded promptly to the call. Civil protection elements managed to extinguish the flames and rescue the elderly woman, while security services and local authorities secured the perimeter of the fire site.
Following the incident, security services prepared a report on the case, and an investigation was opened under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor to determine the circumstances and causes of the incident. The elderly woman was escorted to the on-duty police station to take her statement and consider her desire to file a complaint on the matter.
This incident has highlighted the significant risks posed by abandoned and neglected buildings in Moroccan cities. These buildings often become refuges for the homeless and hotbeds of crime, as well as posing a real danger to public safety. Local authorities bear a great responsibility in addressing this problem by activating laws related to buildings at risk of collapse, organizing campaigns to renovate and rehabilitate these buildings, or demolishing them if necessary. Authorities should also intensify monitoring of these sites to prevent their illegal use.
It is worth noting that investigations are still ongoing to uncover all the details of the incident. The concerned authorities are expected to issue an official statement later clarifying the results of the initial investigations, and possibly including new measures to deal with the phenomenon of abandoned buildings in the city.
