Ikram Hannawi, a parliamentarian from the Progress and Socialist Party, warned of the growing phenomenon of suicide in the Taounate region, calling for proactive and urgent initiatives by the various actors in the region to contain this alarming phenomenon.
In a media statement, Hannawi explained that although suicide has become a “real phenomenon” in the region, it has not received the necessary attention in terms of shedding light on it and understanding its contexts and variables.
She pointed out that psychological, social, health, and mental factors all play a role in exacerbating this phenomenon, making it complex and complicated.
The parliamentarian called for the activation of social, economic and cultural programs in the region, as well as the rehabilitation of an integrated health offer that includes mental and psychological health, and stressed the need for more equitable public policies for the territorial areas, and more justice between different social groups.
In the past week, the Taounate region has witnessed four suicides, the most recent of which was the death of a man in his 40s who was found hanging in a roundabout in the Tamdet community.
This phenomenon is very worrying and requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders to combat it, understand its deep causes, and provide the necessary psychological and social support to the most vulnerable groups.
