Marrakech, Morocco: Within the framework of the “5+5 Defense” initiative for the year 2024, the Royal Moroccan Air Force Schools Base in Marrakech hosted a seminar from May 20 to 24 under the title: “Use of Drones: Air Safety Challenges in the 5+5 Defense Framework”.
The seminar was attended by delegations from the member countries of the “5+5 Defense” initiative ((Maghreb countries + Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Mauritius)*, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and Mauritius), as well as experts and specialists in the field of drones from various countries.
Rich Presentations and Discussions:
The seminar featured presentations on the expected development of drone capabilities and the threats they pose in the context of regional defense. It also discussed the implications of their use on aviation safety and security issues.
The seminar sessions also focused on anti-drone threat systems, especially in light of their recent proliferation, which poses new security and defense challenges.
An Opportunity for Knowledge and Expertise Exchange:
The seminar provided an important opportunity for delegations from participating countries to exchange knowledge and expertise on the challenges and uses of drones in regional defense.
The seminar concluded with a ceremony to award certificates to participants and exchange gifts between representatives of the attending delegations, in an atmosphere of cooperation and understanding among the member states of the “5+5 Defense” initiative.

This seminar is an important step towards strengthening security and defense cooperation among the member states of the “5+5 Defense” initiative, especially in light of the rapid developments in the field of drones and the threats they pose.
The seminar also reaffirms the commitment of the participating countries to promoting peace and stability in the region, through the exchange of expertise and joint coordination to address common security and defense challenges.
*The P5+5 is a group of Western Mediterranean countries that operates under the umbrella of the European Union and is concerned with issues of economic partnership, development, security in the region, organising migration and combating illegal migration. The P5+5 comprises five European countries, namely Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Portugal and Spain, and the five countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU). The group also endeavours to develop social and cultural relations and scientific and technological exchange between its members.
