Moroccan Government Accelerates Efforts to Promote Amazigh Language Education

In a public session dedicated to oral questions in the House of Representatives, Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Mohamed Saad Barada, delivered a comprehensive response outlining the government’s efforts to advance the teaching of the Amazigh language in educational institutions. He emphasized that this initiative is a key priority for the government, in alignment with constitutional obligations and the high royal directives.

The minister began his address by extending congratulations to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the new Amazigh year 2974, expressing pride in the strides made to solidify the status of the Amazigh language as an integral component of Morocco’s national identity. He underlined that promoting the Amazigh language is not only a constitutional mandate but also reflects a firm conviction about preserving the cultural and linguistic heritage of the kingdom.

Presenting progress data, the minister highlighted significant developments in recent years. The number of specialized teachers in Amazigh language education increased from 200 in 2021 to 400 additional teachers in 2022, reaching 600 new teachers in 2023 and another 650 in 2024. He noted that this growth demonstrates a clear commitment to strengthening the presence of the Amazigh language, particularly in primary education.

The minister also announced an ambitious program to train over 3,000 specialized teachers for Amazigh language education in primary schools, aiming to accelerate its integration. Currently, coverage in primary schools has reached 40%, benefiting 6,936 students across 3,400 primary schools, with approximately 3,400 teachers contributing to these efforts.

He reaffirmed the government’s determination to continue enhancing the status of the Amazigh language within the educational system, focusing on teacher training and curriculum development. These efforts aim to align with the aspirations of future generations to embrace Morocco’s diverse national identity.
