Unemployment and High Cost of Living: Baraka Denounces Government Failures

Nizar Baraka, the Secretary General of the Istiqlal Party, has warned about the deterioration of the economic and social situation in Morocco. During a speech delivered on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the presentation of the Independence Manifesto, Baraka highlighted the significant increase in the unemployment rate, which has reached 21.3% according to the latest general census of population and housing.

Baraka expressed legitimate concerns regarding the future of Moroccan youth, asserting that “this climate of uncertainty exacerbates the crisis of confidence that the country is experiencing.” He pointed out that unemployment and the high cost of living are at the heart of this crisis.

Alarming statistics indicate a continuous rise in unemployment, which has reached very high levels in recent years. The youth unemployment rate stands at 39.5%, while the rate for women is 29.6%. Baraka also addressed the deterioration of the middle class, which has been exacerbated by rising living costs and persistent social inequalities, despite measures taken by the government such as health coverage and social support.

He emphasized that the scarcity and precariousness of created jobs limit opportunities for social mobility, particularly for young people. Baraka insisted on the urgent need to transform mentalities and unleash new creative energy to seize international and regional opportunities.

The leader of the Istiqlal Party also discussed challenges related to extreme climate phenomena, such as droughts and floods, which negatively impact youth resilience and the living conditions of future generations. He condemned the lack of adequate political responses to these complex challenges and the rise in social tensions.

Finally, Baraka criticized what he considers “misleading information” regarding proposed amendments to the Family Code (Moudawana), clarifying that these amendments will only be finalized after their adoption by the Council of Government and then by Parliament.
