2024 General Population and Housing Census: Denial of Connection to Social Support and Emphasis on Complete Confidentiality of Information

Widespread news circulating on social media regarding the connection between the ongoing census results and opportunities for social support has raised deep concerns among the Moroccan public as the 2024 General Population and Housing Census begins.

Rumors and Concerns

These “rumors” suggest that providing authorities with accurate information about the social and economic status of households could lead to some groups being denied government support if it is found that their living conditions have improved. Such concerns may negatively impact citizens’ willingness to participate in this important process, especially as fears about the repercussions of providing accurate information might drive them to evade participation or provide misleading data.

Confidentiality of Information and Census Objectives

Mohamed Jadri, an economic analyst, confirmed that the statistical process related to the General Population and Housing Census is characterized by complete confidentiality of information, making it impossible for the High Commission for Planning to share this data with any other institution. He explained that the census form does not include any questions regarding the monthly income of households or their profits, thus denying any connection between this process and the unified social register. The primary objective of this census is to collect data on the population size, educational levels, technology usage, as well as issues related to disability, migration, social protection, and access to essential health services.

Addressing the Rumors

In response to the circulating “rumors,” Jadri emphasized that the claims made by some pessimistic individuals regarding this process are unfounded, stressing the need to firmly counter these rumors. He highlighted that the operation required a significant expenditure of 1.5 billion dirhams to ensure its success. He urged all citizens to actively participate in this census, asserting that the updated data collected will be essential for developing comprehensive public policies in health, education, and economics, addressing issues in the informal sector, improving infrastructure, and tackling regional disparities while enhancing women’s involvement. In conclusion, the economic analyst categorically denied any intention to exclude any group from receiving support, considering such claims mere rumors that have no basis in reality.
