The Moroccan capital, Rabat, witnessed a large demonstration on Saturday where thousands of protesters gathered in the city center to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people and their rejection of normalizing relations with Israel. The demonstrators carried pictures of Hamas political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed this week in Iran.
The protesters marched towards the parliament building, raising Palestinian flags and pictures of Haniyeh, as well as a cardboard coffin bearing his image. Many wore black and white Palestinian keffiyehs. They chanted slogans such as “Greetings from Rabat to our friends in Gaza and the Al-Qassam Brigades” and “The people want to end normalization.” An Israeli flag was also seen being burned during the demonstration.
Halima Hilali, 64, told AFP: “Ismail Haniyeh was a Palestinian leader and a symbol that motivates us to demonstrate.” She added that the war on Gaza is “a disgrace to humanity that does nothing.”
Nabil Nasseri, 42, who came from the city of Salé, said: “Demonstrating is the least we can do to help our Palestinian brothers, and I think all Muslims should do it.” He added: “We cannot have relations with a group of criminals, we hope to end relations” with Israel.
Protesters raised banners reading “We do not recognize Israel,” “(Haniyeh) is the way,” and “America is terrorist.” The demonstration was organized at the call of the National Action Group for Palestine, which includes leftist formations and the Islamic Justice and Development Party.
Since the beginning of the war on Gaza on October 7, which was sparked by an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israeli territory, Morocco has witnessed several large demonstrations. The Kingdom has officially called for “an immediate, comprehensive, and lasting halt to the Israeli war on Gaza.”
Hamas and Tehran have vowed to avenge the death of Ismail Haniyeh, who was in Iran to attend the inauguration of the new president, raising fears of the region igniting amid the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
