Last weekend, the Meknes province witnessed a significant meeting chaired by Abdelghani Sbbar, the governor of Meknes province, to discuss the progress of the “Grand Meknes Stadium” project, which represents a major step towards the development of sports in the city.
The meeting was attended by several important figures, including the President of the Fes-Meknes region, the President of the Meknes Provincial Council, the President of the Meknes Municipality, the President of the Ait Oualal Municipality, in addition to a representative from the Meknes Football Club.
According to available preliminary data, the project, which will be implemented on an area of 20 hectares, includes the construction of a massive stadium with a capacity of 25,000 spectators, with the possibility of future expansion. Additionally, the “Meknes Football Academy” will be built on an 8-hectare plot, with preliminary studies expected to begin in the coming weeks. The total cost of the project, which includes both the stadium and the academy, will reach 40 billion centimes, and it will be implemented on land in the Ait Oualal Municipality, near the eastern entrance to the city.
The project will be fully funded by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which has confirmed its commitment to financing it based on a promise made by the federation’s president, Fouzi Lekjaa, during a previous meeting with local parliamentarians and sports figures.
In a step towards its realization, a specialized committee visited the designated site for the project, where the land boundaries were precisely determined in preparation for the next phase. It is worth noting that this project came as a result of a proposal by Fouzi Lekjaa following the exclusion of Meknes from the list of cities to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. He proposed the construction of a world-class stadium with a comprehensive sports academy to develop young talents in the city.
